PS 29’s goal is to transform our existing garden into an outdoor teaching space that will teach students the importance of healthy eating, sustainable living, and the role of nature in our lives. Sustainable practices are embedded in the culture of PS 29. Led by our student Green Team Leaders, our Sustainability Coordinator, and school community, PS 29’s students are sorting waste in the classrooms and in the cafeteria.  These sustainable practices start in our garden; students support our garden’s closed-loop system through the use of rain barrels, compost tumblers, and food/seed production.  Our efforts have been recognized by numerous grants and awards, such as the 2015 EcoSchools Green Flag Award. PS 29’s garden was envisioned as the school’s farm.  The connection between gardening and healthy eating is concrete; produce harvested during the school year is used in the cafeteria for the salad bar and hot items such as pesto pasta and roasted squash.  The garden’s role in supporting healthy eating is bolstered by other activities including the Wellness in the Schools programs; PS 29’s Harvest Week; Grown to Learn NYC Garden to Café program; and after-school gardening and cooking classes.
