    Nomz

I personally thought this was delicious. I made it with coconut milk, and *disclaimer: not a vegan, but trying to cut dairy and use up what I have before buying nondairy products* a little bit of Kerrygold butter and I was surprised how good it was. I also added in some broccoli and pepper to give it a kick. I'll be sure to try it again with some vegan butters once I get some. Maybe that's the trick to make it taste good? Don't know, but I was impressed.

BUY THIS MAC N' CHEESE (you won't regret it)

I personally have been dairy free for about 5 years, and have been searching for an adequate mac n' cheese alternative for just as long. I have tried almost every commercially available dairy free mac n cheese alternative without success. To those singing the praising of daiya and earth balance, I personally disagree. Those two products taste extremely processed to me. But Annie's vegan shells are wonderful! Tastes like sweet potato creamy goodness, and I loved every bite. I think that if you expect a vegan mac n' cheese to taste like real cheese, you are going to be disappointed. This product, however, is in it's own right. Thanks, Annie's!

    LOVE

So good! Didn't taste like chemicals like so many other vegan boxed mac and cheese. Add a little salt and its perfect. This is my new favorite!

    Thankful dairy-free customer

I think it was great! I like that there aren't any weird ingredients. I liked the taste. It was creamy and tasted just like what a boxed mac and cheese should taste like. I have severe dairy allergies so I was very happy to come across this product. My very picky 9 yr old loved it also. It's a total win when she prefers pumpkin and sweet potato sauce as opposed to Kraft yellow 5 sauce. Even Daiya brand has a weird chemical taste. I don't feel so left out now when there is Mac and cheese at a potluck. Thank you so much!

    Great taste, and dairy/soy free!

I'm allergic to dairy and soy, and unfortunately a lot of dairy-free mac and "cheese" is either soy-based or includes soy in some amount. I almost didn't pick up the Annie's box, because usually anything marketed as "vegan" is bound to have soy, as companies tend to market to vegetarian/vegan choice diets rather than consumers with food allergies. I am glad that I did though, because the shells and creamy sauce are delicious! Very fast to make, and while they don't taste exactly like mac and cheese (no dairy substitute is going to!), the taste is still rich and flavorful. And I don't even like sweet potatoes!

    Amazing!

This is SO good. I tried the gluten free version back in April when I first started my vegan journey and didn't love it. NOW however, with my tastebuds all refreshed from getting off animal junk, I have new found love. This is delicious and creamy. I wish I could buy jars of this sauce! Add some peas, kale and tomatoes for an extra nutrition boost and make this your comfort meal. LOVE LOVE LOVE

Whoever said this tastes like mac n cheese forgot what cheese tastes like

This stuff is bad. I mean really bad. If you've recently converted to veganism from either vegetarianism or straight up meat eater, do not buy this product because you will be very disappointed. The scent, a god awful mixture of pumpkin and sweet potatoes, is sure to hit your gag reflexes as soon as it reaches your nose. The taste however, is even more gag worthy. Bland with a touch of sweet and a very VERY mild cheese flavor. Add that with the overpowering bad scent and you have a recipe for vomit-inducing fun! Not to mention it takes forever for the "cheese" powder to mix with the pasta. Now if you are reading this and you've recently converted to veganism/are lactose intolerant, a good on is daiya mac n cheese. One of the best I've ever tried. Also, people have mentioned that earth balance is a good brand and also actually tastes like mac n cheese so you'll have to try that one as well. But don't try this unless you're a level 5 vegan and forgot what cheese tastes like in the first place.

    Ate the whole box. *burp*

Definitely ate the whole box. I didn't have any nondairy milk, so I added a spoonful of Earth Balance Spread, a spoonful of Tofutti Sour Cream, and a splash of water. A little s & p, and it was perfect! There's a reason it is not called 'mac & cheese', and instead 'shells and creamy sauce'. It definitely is more on the sweet & spiced squash side, which is better than some crappy fake cheese recipe, in my opinion. This was reviewed on Box Mac (a YouTube mac and cheese rating show) and they have three full episodes of tasting vegan macs. That is where I heard about this product. A+!

    Great Tasting and Relatively Healthy

It doesn't taste like mac n' cheese because it isn't called mac n' cheese. It is low fat, and doesn't have an egregious amount of sodium which is a huge plus. If you want something loaded with fat and salt that tastes more like traditional mac n' cheese, this isn't it, albeit I prefer this.

    Yum!

Tried this on a whim, and am sure glad I did. First couple bites I had to adjust to the taste because it's different from real cheese, but after I had a few more tastes I was hooked. Delicious! Don't judge it off your first bite if you're used to real cheese in your macaroni. This product is great too

    Do NOT Recommend

This was disgusting. I've never felt the urge to write a bad review until I tasted this product. First of all the smell is horrible. Everytime I took a whiff of the sauce, it felt as if I put my head into a container of spice that weren't supposed to be mixed together. On top of that the sauce actually tastes like nothing. It has no flavor whatsoever, which I think they tried to compensate for with the smell. Overall, I do not recommend this product and will probably not consume another Annie's product again, since there vegan options are horrible.

This was so gross! Tastes NOTHING like mac and cheese. More like a really gross Indian spice stretchy mustard sauce. The smell, texture, and flavor is all OFF! Disappointed. So good!

After recently being diagnosed with lactose intolerance I have been looking for a comfort food substitute for a couple months - this product is it. I love the onion/garlic taste which is much better than the sock-like taste you get from other cheese simulated products. Wish it was sold in more stores than just Whole Foods near me!

    Perfect for Lactose Intolerance/Dairy Allergies!

Most of all I really loved how it tasted like real mac and cheese. It wasn't as cremey as i hoped but the taste was nice. I liked that this wasn't gluten free, most of the 'dairy free/vegan' stuff' i've found in my area are both and that gives it a cardboard taste. It didn't taste fake and felt good after i ate it. Of coarse you can't replace the real thing, but it was enough to satisfy me!

  • Brandi Bento Sep, 25, 2016

    Unreal!

Not only is this mac delicious as prepared, it's the only "healthy" one I've come across. None of that fake cheese flavor in the sauce either. I like the shells better than the gluten free elbows version. My favorite way to have it is prepared as usual, but add taco sauce, pinto beans, and lots of nutritional yeast. I literally bought every single box at the store because I have it so often!

    Awesome

I love this mac and cheese, my favorite restaurant has vegan mac and cheese that I am always craving and it tastes very similar. I am not vegan but am very lactose intolerant and good lactose free boxed mac and cheese is extremely hard to find. Four stars because it doesn't taste exactly like traditional mac and cheese but still is delicious in its own right.

    Not tangy, but delicious!

add coconut milk, skip the earth balance. 3.5 stars!

3.5 stars. i prepared it with full fat coconut milk and it was great! most definitely didn't "taste" like real dairy mac and cheese, but it had the right mouth feel. it tasted like a nice, creamy, vegan pasta dish. then i added the earth balance vegan butter--and it didn't taste as good. the earth balance added a sweet note that i didn't care for. so i would recommend coconut milk and no earth balance. lastly, i put lots of cracked pepper and nutritional yeast on it. this added some much needed umami and spice. don't add salt, it's plenty salty enough. would i eat it again? yes, but as a good pasta dish, not as a substitute for mac and cheese.

    I love Annie's Vegan Mac & Cheese!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff! I think it is perfect and is now one of my favorite meals. I guess I just really like the flavor that Annie's created. I haven't been eating mac and cheese for five years now, so perhaps that's why I'm not bothered like some others are. I make it by adding the half cup of unsweetened almond milk and 2 TBSP of Melt Organic Buttery Spread (or earth balance, whatever I have on hand) and mmm mm is it good! It also pairs really well with sauteéd kale being mixed in. By far my favorite boxed mac and cheese. Thanks Annie's for creating this :)

Well worth a second (and more try)!

This is really very good. I had tried the earlier release and it wasn't good and then they corrected and I love it. I actually crave it of all the options out there. In fairness I have been vegan for almost 20 years, without question my tastes have changed, but if you tried an early box, give it a second chance. And I do eat earth balance, daiya, and long ago, Road's End. So I have a long history with vegan box pasta mixes. This one I never feel yucky after eating!

Not WORST, by far NOT THE BEST.

I needed to find the top mac and cheese for those lazy nights. I tried a few different brands and Annie's was by no means the WORST, however, it was far from the best. This was a complete disappointment because a staple college meal for me was Annie's creamy shells and broccoli. I think the biggest problem was that I expected it to taste remotely like the non-vegan option. It was far from. If I go into it with the mindset that it tastes like veggies then it will be great (and add in some broccoli, squash, carrots...). However, as a stand alone mac and cheese dish I would rather go with another brand I found.

    Yummy!

I like it! It's a little different that a sauce that's pretending to be cheese. Still delicious though. I admit I use more Earth balance and less milk than recommended. I can't believe it's pumpkin and sweet potato based! I couldn't figure out what was different tasting about it than the others. Thanks Annies and keep up the good work!!!

Great Flavor, but tastes nothing like original Mac & Cheese

Okay, let's be real, this tastes nothing like the non-vegan mac and cheese we're all used to. If you're looking for something that's vegan that's realest to that taste in box form go with the Earth Balance brand. However when buying this kind I was afraid of it tasting horrible because of other reviews, but today I made it and I love the flavor. It's sweet potato like with herbs and spices, nothing like cheese though. I love sweet potatoes so maybe this is why I love it so much. The taste also reminds me of Imagine's sweet potato or Pacific's butternut squash soup so if you've had that before that's what it kinda tastes like in pasta form. Also for the guy who says that "The powder gooped up and formed a slimy un-dissolvable mess" he probably isn't good at cooking lol. I added my Earth Balance butter to the warm sauce pan and poured in my soy milk, then added the sauce packet, stirred with a fork then noticed the lumps weren't coming out, so I used a whisk, and the whisk was able to get all of the lumps out, then I kept stirring on the heat until it thickened some, it was creamy so idk what this guy is talking about lol. Overall I would rate 4.5 but it won't let me do half stars, only because it isn't really a "Mac & Cheese" it's more of a "Mac & Creamy Sweet Potato Sauce". However I put 5 because I think these other reviews really aren't showing a good representation of the product. Basically if you like sweet potatoes you will probably like this, if you don't then you probably won't.

    Its pretty good

I honesty really enjoyed this pasta, I think it has a really great flavor, but you shouldn't compare it to mac and cheese. It is not quite as creamy as I wished it would be because it was maybe a tad dry. Overall I loved and will continue to purchase it.

    Really good!

I love trying different vegan macaroni and cheeses, there are so many creative recipes out there now. I was skeptical about pumpkin and sweet potato together as a sauce but it's really delicious! Obviously it didn't taste like real cheese, but it's great, and super healthy. I used coconut milk, not almond milk like the box said, since that's what I had on hand and I didn't have any trouble with it being a funny texture or hard to blend as some have commented, so maybe that would help if anyone is checking this before they buy it?

    blech

This is without a doubt the worst fraud ever perpetrated on my taste buds. I don't know if you were even trying to make it like mac and cheese but if you did you failed miserably. "Creamy shells and sauce" is not even true. The powder gooped up and formed a slimy un-dissolvable mess. The taste is awful. Really sweet and onion-y and otherwise bland; I mean, have you ever heard of salt or nutritional yeast? This is an insult to every dairy-allergic child who just wants mac and cheese that won't kill him. Try rebranding this as "awfully bland sweet potato and pumpkin pasta" or maybe "shells and lies". Would give no stars but this format won't let me.

This is the BEST boxed vegan mac & cheese i've ever had!!! A lot of imitation cheeses have a really chemical taste them but this has a very natural, warm taste that is delicious.

    Not Mac and Cheese

The sauce by itself tastes delicious, like a soft herbed cheese you might eat with bread. On top of the noodles, however, it tastes way too sweet and herby and loses its cheesy flavor. Earth Balance mac & cheese is much much better and I recommend that brand instead.

    Hmmm

I was really excited to finally have an organic AND vegan boxed mac n cheese but unfortunately I didn't really care for the flavor or texture. There was a weird wasabi taste to it although I did not see it listed on the ingredients panel. Also it was a tad bit sweet from the pumpkin/sweet potatoes which did not mix well with the wasabi. I tried adding broccoli and nutritional yeast but it was still hard to eat and the flavor just did not do anything for me. I really wanted to like this because the ingredients are better than Earth Balance's boxed mac n cheese....I will give it one more try the next time it's on sale and maybe add in some more dairy free butter. Thanks anyway, Annies!
