The Greenleaf Garden Club: Growing Together

When Greenleaf Whittier Elementary School in Camden, NJ originally wrote to us, they only planned on having three classroom container gardens.  However due to “overwhelming enthusiasm” from students, staff, parents, and the community, Greenleaf was able to plant seven container gardens!

Every three weeks, the 35 members of the Garden Club met after school to discuss a variety of topics: the different parts of a plant, “warm weather” vs. “cool weather” plants, and what it means to grow organic.  Students shared their new knowledge by holding demonstrations of how to transplant a seedling to a larger pot.  At the end of the school year students, staff, and parents celebrated their harvest with a Salad Party.  Yum!

Next year Greenleaf is planning on an outdoor, raised-bed garden.  Greenleaf will be partnering with the Camden City Garden Club and their local Whole Foods to obtain volunteers, compost, and more plants!
