Sparta Elementary School: Growing Goodness on the Go
The folks at Sparta Elementary in Sparta, NC, came up with a great idea for growing goodness on the go. Cecilia, a teacher in the Academically Gifted program, tells us, “We love our mobile gardens. In order to share garden space throughout the school we planted our small gardens in wheel barrows.”
For Sparta’s very first school garden, 125 first and second grade classes planted peas, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, and cabbage with certified organic seeds and plants. 40 students also had the chance to garden through an afterschool program. Focusing on organic cultivation, students developed a deeper understanding of plants’ growth needs.
Moving forward, Sparta Elementary would like to raise worms, practice composting, and establish a permanent terraced garden to introduce the curriculum to all grade levels. Cecilia tells us, “We hope to expand to an outdoor area next year because of the interest generated by our gardens on wheels.”
Wheelbarrow gardens are a great way to start out for schools with limited space or access to unpaved areas. Wheelbarrow gardens are also great for sharing a garden among several classrooms.
